Ranging in color from reddish brown to dark silvery-grey to silvery-grey, the one thing each hematite nodule has in common is a rust-red streak.
Reddish soils get their color from hematite.
Hematite crystals are considered rare and are sought after by collectors. |
hema-red
Hematite is a compact form of iron oxide. It varies considerably in compactness and form. Its hardest and most compact form, which is black and normally found in massive form as nodules (usually kidney shaped) is what is used in jewelry.
An important iron ore, hematite's blood red color (in the powdered form) lends itself well in use as a pigment.
