The Golden Ring is a group of cities northeast of Moscow with historic, religious, and architectural importance because these ancient towns played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. Today they employ many full-time artists who restore churches and other religious buildings as well as practice the ancient art of icon painting.
