Almost always shown with a joyful countenance -- smiling or laughing -- Budai or Pu-Tai, as he known in China, is a folkloric deity whose name means "Cloth Sack," from the bag in which he carries his few possessions. According to folklore, rubbing Budai's belly brings wealth, good luck, and prosperity.
