A mere 5 1/2" miles west of Vesuvius, Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. When Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D, it caused widespread destruction around the Bay of Naples but spared Naples itself. The mineral vesuvianite was first discovered there adjacent to lavas on Mount Vesuvius, hence its name.
